From Starting Out to Scaling Up: Rich’s Mentoring Journey

Rich Turner, founder & CEO of LP Revolution
Building a business is rarely a straight line. For LP Revolution founder Rich, the journey has seen him grow from finding his feet as a new business owner, to building a successful and profitable consultancy.
Now eight years into running his business, we caught up with him to find out how it's going, and what impact his Kent Foundation mentor had along the journey...
Tell us about your business...
I run LP Revolution, a leadership, coaching and team performance business. I work with organisations to develop more confident managers, improve how teams communicate and work together, and help people perform at their best in a sustainable way. I often draw on lessons from sport and high-performance environments to bring the ideas to life.
Why did you start your business?
I’ve always been interested in helping people perform at their best and wanted to build a business around that. I originally started in corporate wellbeing, and over time my focus evolved towards leadership development and team coaching. The work has changed, but helping people and teams thrive has always been at the heart of it.
What has your business mentor helped you with the most?
When I first came to The Kent Foundation around six years ago, I was still near the start of my business journey. My mentor, Richard, helped me put together my business plan and work out what I really needed to focus on.
More than anything, he’s been someone I can bounce ideas and frustrations off. He’s helped me take a step back, challenge my thinking, see things from different angles and set sensible goals for the quarter and the year. Having that outside perspective has been hugely valuable.
Are there any milestone achievements you have experienced since working with your mentor?
I’ve now been running my business for nearly eight years. One of the biggest milestones has been upskilling and evolving it from a corporate wellbeing business into leadership development and team performance coaching. That change has made a significant difference to both the work I do and the income I earn.
I’ve also become much more intentional about how I run the business, manage myself and put the right processes in place to keep growing.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about starting a business?
Get some support early on. Having someone experienced to talk things through with, help shape a business plan and challenge your thinking is so valuable.
It’s easy to get caught up trying to do everything. Work out the key areas that will actually move your business forward, set clear goals and keep coming back to those priorities.
What is your favourite part of being a business owner?
The freedom and ownership. I get to choose the kind of work I do, how I approach it and where I focus my energy. No two days are the same, I get to work with all sorts of different people, and I have the chance to spend my time doing things I really enjoy.
At The Kent Foundation, we're proud to support entrepreneurs like Rich as they build successful, sustainable businesses. Through mentoring, young business owners gain access to experienced professionals who can provide guidance, encouragement and an outside perspective when it's needed most.
